This paper shows several problems related to the pronunciation of Spanish vowels in L2 Spanish of Czech learners, so called Czech Spanish. Based on the comparison of Czech and Spanish vowel space and new developments in Czech phonology, the paper takes a closer look at the features of openness-closeness/frontness-backness and gives a theoretical account on the problem of acquiring Spanish phonology, inspired by Flege’s Speech Mechanism Model.
On these grounds, several predictions for the future investigations are formulated.
