Abstract

Food allergy is a major cause of anaphylaxis in children. The prevalence of food allergy and anaphylaxis is increasing in developed countries.

Anaphylaxis involves the combination of cutaneous, respiratory, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal symptoms. The first-line treatment for anaphylaxis is epinephrine 1 : 1000 (1 mg/ml) at a dose of 0,1 miligrams per 10 kg of body weight (0,1 ml/10 kg).

The maximum single dose is 0.5 mg in 0,5 ml. As soon as the condition is recognized, adrenalin is injected promptly by the intramuscular route in the anterolateral part of the mid-thigh.

H1-antihistamines, glucocorticoids and beta2-agonists are used in addition to epinephrine.
