From 265 reviewed records, a study cohort was selected of 50 patients who fulfilled the international clinical criteria for the diagnosis of anaphylaxis (25 in Ostrava, resp. HK).
The median age was 11 years and the cohort included 58 % boys. Food induced anaphylaxis predominated in Ostrava (68 %), whereas anaphylaxis triggered by biting insects was the most common one in HK (48 %).
Peanuts provoked the anaphylaxis most commonly (53 %) in Ostrava, whereas nuts, fruits and poppy were the main causative foods in Hradec Králové. Twenty three children in each of the two centers were initially treated for anaphylaxis in the primary emergency office.
Dermatologic and respiratory symptoms were most common, occuring in 96 and 80 % of episodes, respectively. The patients received epinephrine (13 % in HK and 39 % in Ostrava), antihistamines (57 % in HK and 52 % in Ostrava), corticosteroids (74 % in HK and 91 % in Ostrava) and calcium (17 % in HK and 48 % in Ostrava).
At discharge from hospital, 65 % of patients were prescribed self-injectable epinephrine.
