The motion along a path by means of legs as the source domain of the time metaphors in Czech

Abstract

The contribution is focused on the issues of conceptualisation of the time in Czech. It represents an approach to the metaphors of time based on the linguistic research of corporeality, especially of expressions concerned with the parts of body and their functions.

In the research the legs were shown as the prototypical means of the natural human motion. Every day in our lives we move from some starting point along some path to some target using our legs.

According to the M. Johnson's theory so called image schemas are based on our bodily experience of the world.

The complex image schema connected with the legs and their functions can be called THE MOTION ALONG A PATH BY MEANS OF LEGS (MPL). And it is the source domain of the time metaphors in the Czech, for example TIME IS MPL; TIME IS MOVING BEING WITH LEGS etc.

The contribution aims to differentiate such metaphors. The contribution treats the well-known assumption, that the time and space are closely connected, but it shows the issues from the perspective of corporeality, from the point of view of semantic extensions of the somatism noha (leg).
