Comparison of two molecular biology practical courses at high schools

Publication at Faculty of Science |

Abstract

Biology lessons at high schools are mainly theoretical in most cases. This is even more true for relatively new disciplines like molecular biology and genetics.

We therefore created two laboratory tasks focused on molecular biology and realized them with high school students. The practical courses included methods like PCR, electrophoresis, Western blotting and visualizing proteins.

Because of being interdisciplinary they are suitable for biology, chemistry or specialized seminars. Students and teachers assessed both practical courses through the questionnaires.

In this article, we compare proposed laboratory tasks according to the answers written in these questionnaires. Students and teachers evaluated practical exercises from different aspects and considered them very contributive.

They highlighted the connection of theory and practical training.
