Abstract
Autoimmune thyroid diseases are common in the population of women of reproductive age. Positivity for anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies occurs in approximately 10% and thyroid hypofunction in 5% of pregnant women.
Low thyroid function in the mother can adversely affect the course of pregnancy, delivery, as well as the psychomotor development of the offspring. Autoimmune thyroid diseases can be easily diagnosed and treated.
The Czech Society of Endocrinology recommends that all pregnant women be screened for autoimmune thyroid disease as soon as possible after the pregnancy has been established. In order to determine the correct diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune thyroid diseases in women of reproductive age, participation of various medical specialities is required, particularly including general practitioners, gynaecologists, internists, immunologists and endocrinologists.
The present article summarizes the current knowledge and recommendations concerning the management of thyroid disease in pregnancy and it provides practical hints for common practice.
