The study deals with a historical event in South Africa known as the "Sharpeville Massacre". The massacre in Sharpeville took place on March 21st 1960 in a small town close to Johannesburg and it had a significant impact on the approach to the policy of racial segregation.

South African police opened fire on a crowd of protesters who were protesting against the pass laws; 69 people were killed and many others wounded. Sharpeville became a symbol of the policy of racial segregation and oppression of the non - white population of South Africa and gained a worldwide response.

This study focuses not only on the event itself but also on the following impact of the worldwide criticism of apartheid on relations with the Commonwealth, United Nations Organization, Organization of African Unity and the United States of America.
