Education of Journalists in the Czech Republic

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2013

Abstract

The paper offers a brief overview of the current state of university journalism (communication and media science) education in the Czech Republic. It is based on a reminder of the historical context and development of vocational education.

It focuses on the first attempts of Czech journalism education in the 1920s and 1930s, describes its post-war development and tracks in some detail the changes of the independent faculty of Charles University since its establishment in the 1960s to the present. It also offers a brief insight into the current situation of (occupational) self-knowledge.

Finally, it approaches in detail the current offer of higher education in the fields of communication in the Czech Republic. In conclusion, it identifies the current challenges and risks and specifically warns against the decline of scientific endeavour in favour of excessive teaching load.
