Abstrakt
The so called „Frauendienst“ of Ulrich von Liechtenstein was considered to bet he first autobiography in Middle High German language. Generations of researchers were glad to get information about the political and social life in the middle of the 13th century in Austria.
But later colleagues didn’t accept the genre „autobiography“ for the mostly fictional „Frauendienst“. An analysis from different points of views shows: it’s not a matter of the text itself, but a question of how to describe the genre „autobiography“.
