Mental Disability and Creativity

Abstract

The article presents a theoretical treatment of the relationship between creativity and mental disability. It defnes the basic theoretical apparatus and goes on to use it to analyse intelligence as the main diagnosable index of mental retardation and creativity as well.

In the view of the multifactorial character of both characteristic, however, the author concludes that the reduced level of reasoning capacity in mentally disabled people does not necessary mean a reduced level of creativity, but merely direct them to creation in areas that are not dependant on this factor, especially to creativity in art.
