Vitamin D implication in osteoporosis

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |

Abstract

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone. Endocrine production of hormonal form of vitamin D is produced in the kidney.

Functions of active form of vitamin D in many tissues and cells strongly indicate broad importance of vitamin D in organism. Vitamin D is critical for healthy bone development.

Inadequate serum levels of vitamin D are associated with decreased intestinal calcium absorption, lower serum ionised calcium, and compensatory increase in parathormone. Many reports and reviews confirm that vitamin D supplementation is effective in prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in the elderly.
