The Use of Latin in Some Texts of Jakub Deml

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2009

Abstract

Author of the treatise submitted here deals with the role of Latin in the work and life of the poet Jakub Deml. After a short overview of Deml´s acitivity as a translator the study focuses on Deml´s translation of a Latin work Slavík Svatého Bonaventury (Philomena by John Peckham) and his commentaries on the translation.

This is followed by the author´s commentary and dispute on recent M.C. Putna´s analysis of the matter in question, i.e.

Deml´s translation. Deml´s knowledge of Latin is further corroborated by an analysis of his use of Latin in another work, Zapomenuté světlo.

On the other hand, the current state of the knowledge of Latin - or its absency - is further documented with an analysis of Haidler´s backward translation of Deml´s Latin in Zapomenuté světlo to Czech.
