Abstract
The article is an expression of acknowledgment to prof. PhDr.Jiří Mareš, CSc. for his work at the Department of social medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in the position of the Head of the department.
It reflects on the periods of his activities there since his coming to the Faculty of Medicine in 1976 including his leading role since 1992 until 2008. Prof.
Mareš significantly contributed to development of the department, to creating new subjects in the undergraduate study and also to founding a Bachelor's program of Nursing.
