Ultrasonography of the parathyroid glands in chronic kidney disease

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2008

Abstract

Ultrasound examination is effective for imaging enlarged parathyroid glands, in particular prior to elective surgery for hyperparathyroidism. It is also beneficial for assessing the effect of conservative treatment.

In common sites, the lates technology is usually capable of resolving formations of the largest sizes over 5 mm. Sometimes, ultrasound examination is combined with fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

In chronic kidney disease, chronic stimulation leads to parathyroid hyperplasia - first diffuse and later nodular. Ultrasonography helps to characterize the changes and may contribute to making therapeutic decisions.

The correct description should comprise the number and location of visible parathyroid glands, their size, structure and type of vascularization.
