Abstract

The overview paper analyses current position of surgical treatment of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Because of continuous development of percutaneous catheterization methods, surgeons are faced to diffuse and more severe coronary artery changes.

Patients are older and often seriously diseased. In detail the author describes miniinvasive revascularization procedures (operations on beating heart, without the use of extracorporeal circulation).

Special interest is paid to revascularization procedures through short thoracotomy, which are the author's great experience. Modern methods such as endoscopic and robotic procedures are reviewed as well as an up-to-date role of laser transmyocardial revascularization.
