Abstract

Prevalence of depression in diabetes mellitus is higher than in general population. Pathogenesis of depression in diabetes is complex comprises negative life events, course and complications of diabetes, neuroendocrinological changes, genetic and personal factors.

The risk of development of depression in patients with diabetes mellitus is higher in comparison with healthy people and on the other hand, depression can increase the risk of onset of type 2 diabetes. A few randomized studies showed efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) as well in the treatment of patients with diabetes.

TCAs are also effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain. The effective psychopharmacological treatment can improve the course of diabetes and quality of life of patients with diabetes.
