Abstract
The authors summarize current state of knowledge about possibilities to explain the influence of drugs originally aimed to lower the level of cholesterol - statins, on the cholinergic system. Especially, the direct and indirect mechanisms of acetylcholinesterase (the key enzyme in acetylcholin metabolism and Alzheimer dementia pathophysiology) inhibition are described.
