Abstract
Quetiapine is registered for the treatment of acute and chronic psychotic states, including schizophrenia, and manic episodes of bipolar disorder. Treatment of drug-induced psychotic symptoms in Parkinson`s disease is a new indication fo quetiapine.
Resulst of open-label studies and a favourable adverse effects profile are promissing for the use of quetiapine in other indications. Quetiapine was tested in the treatment of psychotic smyptoms associated with dementia with Lewy bodies, and psychotic symptoms or behavioral disorderes in other dementias.
Recent expericence did not yet achieve the 'evedence based' level. We describe the risk of antipsychotic therapy in elderly patients sufferint from dementia including cerebrovascular complication.
