Abstract

Glutamine is essential for malnourished patients in the critical state. It serves as the main fuel source and important metabolic substrate for enterocytes, immune system, bone marrow, kidney and liver.

The authors describe the physiological role of glutamine and it's role in critical states and summarize the results of studies with glutamine supplementation in critically ill.
