Protein metabolism in isolated skeletal muscle in sepsis and its modulation

Abstract

The aim of our studies was to evaluate the effect of acidosis and sepsis on protein metabolism and the effect of glutamine, growth hormone and their combination in septic state. All parameters were measured in rats, either in vivo, in perfused liver, or incubated skeletal muscles.

Sepsis had a negative effect on protein and amino acid metabolism that had not been prevented by administration of growth hormone. Supplementation of glutamine had a favorable effect on metabolism of branched-chain amino acids.

Acidosis resulted in negative protein balance with increased protein turnover.
