The role of glutamine in peripheral stem cells transplantation and bone marrow transplantation

Abstract

Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid for malnourished patients in critical state. Patients undergoing stem cells transplantation (SCT) or bone marrow transplantation (BMT) are typically immunocompromised, their intestinal mucosa is damaged by the treatment and hypermetabolism is common.

Glutamine supplementation seems therefore logical. Still, the literary data concerning this are controversial.

The authors summarized the results of available studies with exogenous glutamine supplementation in transplantated patients.
