Small-bowel permeability measurement in patients in critical status at ICU (Intensive Care Unit) gives information about ischaemia and reperfusion injury of the splanchnic area. There is the correlation between small bowel permeability value (lactulose/ mannitol, lactulose/rhamnose indices) and clinical status, existence of multiple organ systemic failure, duration of hospital stay.

In early phases of critical status gastroparesis occurs very often. That is why a test solution is applied into a nasojejunal tube for enteral nutrition, the stomach function is later normalised, and the test solution is applied per os or via a nasogastric tube into the stomach.

The aim of our pilot study was to compare smallbowel permeability after ingestion of a test solution per os and application into the first loop of the jejunum via a nasojejunal tube.
