"Second life" of Alexander Nevsky

Abstract

In terms of Russians' cultural awareness, Alexander Nevsky always played a crucial role. The ideals of particular social strata and interest groups, the Orthodox Church, ruling élites or nationalistic society of the 19th century and others were incorporated into the image of his life.

To ascertain what personal characteristics Alexander Nevsky had is therefore quite difficult, since contemporary sources only offer unsatisfactory information, while the subsequent ones testify rather narrative tradition than reality. Both uncritically exalting and excessively critical stances are to be declined.

During the difficult times of the beginning Tatar dominion, Alexander Nevsky proved to be a pragmatic politician who, when compelled to make hard decisions, essayed to opt for a resolution that, in his opinion, would prove to be advantageous or at least minimally unpropitious to Russian lands.
