Abstract
The study deals with illustrations accompanying popular syntheses of national histories. These huge historical narratives, focused on a folk reader, date back to the half of the 19th century.
The study follows the evolution of a canon of picture appendices to historical narratives and its changes throughout the times. The key question of the study is how the pictures of the past participated in the process of creation the cultural memory of the Czech nation.
