The first part of the contribution identifies several factors that impede a rigorous application of the scientific method and the principles of critical thinking in the field of psychotherapy. These factors exist for both the patients, who refuse to accept the lack of reliable and effective therapeutic interventions in the case of certain diagnoses, and also for the therapists suffering from cognitive biases that may cause an unfounded illusion of expertise to emerge.
Finally, the contribution offers a recommendation that although the behavior of patients and therapists can be understood and explained, it should not be just passively accepted. Instead, it is necessary to try to correct it by adequately informing clients and by educating therapists.
