This article provides basic information on the Legato Itala Cremona Cozzolino of the Mazzini Institute of Genoa, which is a large but little known archive containing the correspondence between Luigi Cremona (1830–1903) and many world famous scientists and scientific institutions. Cremona’s short biography with an overview of his scientific achievements and his role in the development of the Italian scientific community in the second half of the 19th century is included.
The letters written by the mathematicians and scientists from the Czech lands (A. R.
Harlacher, M. Kantor, S.
Kantor, J. S.
Vaněček, Em. Weyr) are shortly described.
In more detail, the letters of Josef Sylvestr Vaněček (1848–1922), a mostly forgotten Czech geometer, are analyzed. On the background of his life, studies, work, scientific as well as pedagogic activities, information given in his letters are commented.
