Abstract

Henry Sweet (1845–1912) was one of the most significant British linguists of the 19th century. Beyond the lasting contribution he made in the field of phonetics, the scope of his talent and interests stretched to encompass historical English, comparative linguistics and the practical aspects of language instruction. This article commemorating the centenary of his death provides a brief overview of his life and goes on to evaluate his work in applied linguistics and language teaching.
