The text offers an interpretation of the distinction between the art of herd rearing and the art of collective or communal rearing. On my reading, this distinction and its further discussion implies the most important polarity between the rule of the sovereign philosopher-king and the rule of the written law that implies the equality extending to all citizens.
Correlatively, with an eye on Platonic myths of the divine rule over men and the issue of human nature, I reread the god’s relation to human beings as a possible blueprint for the role of the philosopher-king.
