This paper focuses on three aspects of the teaching of Slovak at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. The first aspect concerns the institutional framework for Slovak studies, as it changed from a separate university subject (Slovak Studies) provided by a sub-departmental unit (Kabinet slovakistiky) to being a part of more broadly conceived Central European Studies taught by a newly founded department of the same name.
The second aspect relates to how the Czech-Slovak historical and linguistic affinity as well as the academic context of the Faculty of Arts influence the way Slovak is taught at this institution. The third aspect concerns the linguistic diversity of the students of Slovak and their low numbers at present.
Finally, an appendix lists theses about Slovak completed at the Faculty of Arts in the last decade or so.
