Is water footprint a worthwile indicator?

Publication |
2013

Abstract

Despite quite fast spreading of the Water Footprint concept among experts as well as the lay public, it has not been accepted unanimously yet. Many companies have included it in their reporting and commonly used it.

The expert community is still cautious – it has been improving the methodology and doing various analyses; however, it has also been criticizing it. Water Footprint is complementing Ecological and Carbon Footprints that don´t include water.

In spite of similar names, the concepts differ. The product with bigger Water Footprint is not necessarily worse than another product with smaller footprint.

The article explores the potential of the indicator for water resources management.
