The development of language skills before entering school

Abstract

This book describes the development of language skills of preschool age children from birth up to approximately 6 years of age. The development of language skills is provided with an emphasis on the description of language skills as a prerequisite for the development of early reading and spelling.

Detailed description of the development of vocabulary, phonological skills and grammatical competence of preschool children is based on current knowledge in international literature and research and also on findings from research carried out on the population of Czech children. Current concepts of literacy development are provided in a separate chapter.

Other chapters also pay attention to language skills disorders (dyslexia and SLI) and assessment of language skills of preschool children.
