An Anatomy of the early Christian Martyrological Texts

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The contribution addresses the structure, specific motives and development of martyrological text in an attempt to find answer to the question whether these texts reveal aspects of pulp fiction or trivial literature. Using selected passages, the author shows that although it is possible to trace some features which would support this classification (e. g. schematic character or topical description) and there are subjects treated that were certainly attractive to an average reader (torturing practices, intensive violence, tormenting of women stressing erotic aspects, etc.), such places are nevertheless not to be understood as having a purpose in themselves complying with the taste of sensationalist public.

Thus, the author does not categorize martyrological texts as trivial literature.)
