Ethanol - toxicity and mechanisms of action

Abstract

Alcohol consumption go throught human beings, but high consumption was the social-health problem at the last decades in our country. Consumption of pure alcohol (96%) was approximatelly 10 liters per capita per year in Czech Republic.

Toxic effect of ethanol is connented with its amount of intake to organism. Ethanol is metabolised in every tissues and itself or its metabolites are damaging the organism via different pathways, more frequent is liver cirrhosis, alcholic hepatitis, disorders of pancreas, nervous system, muscles and immune system.

Alcohol consuption leads to cancerogenesis and it is confirmed as patological agent in upper digestive tract cancers, hepatocelular cancer and colorectal and breast cancer are under intensive research.
