Typography in the Service of Word Formation

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

Typography, the rational organization of graphic language, has been a rather neglected area of metalexicographic research so far. In the present paper, the repertoire of typographic effects as a means of optimizing the support of the acquisition of word formation in the emerging Large Academic Dictionary German-Czech, an output of a project pursued at the Institute for Germanic Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy & Arts, Charles University in Prague, is considered.

It is posited that the primacy of the user aspect is the key point here. In addition, it is argued that especially authors of electronic dictionaries should be braver in implementing innovative solutions to the problem of representation of word formation in bilingual dictionaries.
