The aim of this article is to analyze the levels of mortality, their differences and development among the EU Member States with emphasis on the Czech and Slovak Republic. In connection with a subject of our interest we attempt to characterize health status using results from EU-SILC.
We focus on some specific indicators: subjective assessment of health, prevalence of chronic diseases, and restriction of daily activities. Finally, we attempt to summarize results and create some classification of the EU Member States into different groups according to character of mortality and health status.
