REACTION TIME IN RELATION TO THE MUSCLE STRENGTH AND GAIT SPEED IN ELDERLY WOMEN

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relation between reaction time, handgrip muscle strength, lower extremity muscle strength and gait speed in older women. The study group consisted of 20 healthy women at a mean age of 68.6±4.8 years.

Handgrip strength was measured using a hand dynamometer. Lower extremity muscle strength was determined by the Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST).

Usual gait speed was measured by the 4-Meter Walk Gait Speed. The reaction time was evaluated using the Vienna Test System.

The results of this study suggest a relationship between lower extremity muscle strength and reaction time with the Determination Test (DT) and the Visual Pursuit Test (LVT).
