Abstract

Zr44Ti11Cu10Ni10Be25 bulk metallic glass was subjected to torsional deformation at room temperature. Large average strain of about unity was reached in the free-end torsion tests.

Based on the evolution of the torque and by analyzing the simultaneously detected acoustic emission, different deformation stages could be identified. In the first stage, the deformation followed the external rotation in a controlled way, then serrations appeared on the torque vs. rotation angle curves in the second stage.

Subsequently, the deformation became controlled again in the third stage and it was accompanied by a small strain hardening.
