Theory of real numbers - from Eudoxus to Dedekind

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |
2013

Abstract

In this article, the basic ideas of Eudoxus' proportionalities and relationship between quantities are explained and they are compared with the underlying ideas of Dedekind's cuts. Some quotations (excerpts) from Dedekind's and Lipschitz' correspondence show their interest in building an exact theory of real numbers as well as their embarrassment which the comparison of both theory caused.
