Inventorying of stony accumulations in the Bukovohorské Středohoří Mts. (northern Bohemia, Czech republic)

Abstract

The paper provides information on the spatial distribution, morphology, and material characteristics of stony accumulations in the Bukovohorské Středohoří Mts. (part of the České Středohoří Mts., Czech Republic). Stony accumulations and their specific position in the landscape are of significant importance in landscape ecology too.

The study area is formed mainly by Tertiary neovolcanites, relicts of Mesozoic sediments and recent sediments. Stony accumulations were created by disintegration of rock blocks (so-called frost-riven cliffs or rocky cliffs) in the periglacial environment.

This area of the Bohemian Massif is very liable to various forms of slope deformations. In the study area altogether thirty localities of stony accumulations were found.

Their occurrence is concentrated in four areas, which are situated mainly in the marginal parts of the study area with a morphologically varied relief. Characteristics of stony accumulations were determined based on statistical processing and evaluation of morphometric and other field data.

A simplified model with five stages of slope evolution, including disintegration of the rocky/frost-riven cliff and creation of the stony accumulations, is presented by the author.
