Vaginal microbiome plays a key role in health and disease of the vaginal environment. Modern technologies (e.g., pyrosequencing) revealed a low diversity of the vaginal microbiome with predominance of several Lactobacillus species.
In some women, lactobacilli can be functionally replaced by another fermenting bacterial microbiota. Characteristics of the main components of the vaginal microbiota and numerous internal and external factors affecting the composition and dynamics of the vaginal microbiome are disscused.
