Suggestions for the psychological assessment pre-bariatric surgery

Abstract

This document was made as result of need for unification of psychological assessment before bariatric surgery. As significant inspiration were used the suggestions published by American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Bariatric surgery also called as metabolic surgery brings unquestionable positive effect in obesity treatment, effect of improvement of somatic diseases, mental disorders and psychosocial functioning. It also brings the significant changes to the patient life which the patient has to be able accept it.

The surgical treatment requires substantial changes in the patient’s lifestyle and it also involves the lifetime cooperation with the whole therapeutic team. Psychological care is a standard part of the treatment process.

The role of a psychologist isn’t exclusively diagnostic. In indicated cases the psychologist offers pre- and post-operative intervention, education and cooperation in creating the individual treatment plan.

The objective is to deepen the motivation of the patient to comply with the dietary and regime recommendations and provide the psychological support in case of worsening the mental difficulties.
