The use of the project method in teaching biochemistry

Abstract

Chemistry education at vocational schools suffers from its position of a marginal subject. Students therefore very often lack motivation to study chemistry even cooperate with teachers during chemistry education.

In a research aimed at particular topics in school chemistry and their motivational potential, students choose above all topics from biochemistry as the most motivating. Therefore it might be possible to increase vocational school students' motivation to learn chemistry by means of concentrating on biochemical topics.

A project-based approach was chosen in order to support this theory. Despite there has been no quantitative method of measuring the effectiveness applied, qualitative indicators suggest this approach is effective.

In this paper the model of this medium-term project is described.
