Václav Černý´s View of the Idea of "Pure Poetry" in Relation to French Symbolism

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2008

Abstract

The "pure poetry" tendency issued from the French symbolism typified by Mallarmé, and, appeared around 1920 in Henri Brémond and Paul Valéry´s theories and poetry. Černý expressed his interest in this poetry on severeal occasions, and wrote a number of articles on this subject. Unfortunately, most of them are of a very general charakter and lack any deep literary analysis of the basic works of this movement.

However, his brilliant commentary on Nezval´s translations od Mallarmé shows his extraordinary talent for exact criticism. After the Second World War in Czechoslovakia, Černý defended Valéry considered as obscure and narcissistic poet and used all possible methods, sometimes even inadequate ones.
