Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a non-invasive method enabling local analgesic treatment of bone metastases. The principle of this new method is inducing precisely directed focal hyperthermia in the area of the bone/metastasis divide.
Its advantages include the possibility to repeat the procedure as necessary, the possibility to utilise it even after the same area has been subjected to radiotherapy and also its quick analgesic effect. Among its disadvantages are the long time necessary to carry out the procedure and the fact that it is contraindicated in cases of bone lesions in the vicinity of important visceral or nerve structures.
