Toxic shock syndrome after rhinoseptoplasty

Abstract

The authors present the case report of a 38-year-old female patient undergoing rhinoseptoplasty, a routine elective ENT surgical procedure. Postoperatively, she experienced a broad range of non-specific symptoms followed by development of shock with high-grade multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) requiring a high level of intensive care.

The primary cause of the condition was eventually found to be directly related to the surgical procedure, and identified as toxic shock syndrome with documented presence of toxicogenic Staphylococcus aureus from nasal splints. The patient was discharged from the hospital after the focus of infection had been eradicated and the shock with MODS had been controlled and cured.
