Althought the majority of indications for I-gel insertion are for airway mainteance during elective operations, the I-gel possesses good features also for use as a device for procedures outside the operating room. The I-gel may be used for airway management during Magnetic Resonance Imaging because it does not create any artifacts during scanning.
In the Intensive Care Unit, use of the i-gel has been described in difficult intubation scenarios and also as an airway device during percutaneous dilatation tracheostomy. The I-gel has been inserted also in pre-hospital care of trauma patiens, by prehospital’s teams as an alternative to tracheal intubation and may have potential for use in combat medicine.
