Abstract

The course of glycaemia near to normal values is the key goal in diabetes therapy to improve importantly patient's long term outcome. Insulin pump therapy which means combination of permanent slow subcutaneous infusion of basal insulin dose according to prepared schema in combination with manually activated prandial boluses represents nowadays the best possibility how to mimic physiological insulin secretion.

New insulin pumps have integrated many modern tools (e.g. the possibility to choose different types of basal and bolus doses, bolus calculator or integrated system of continual glucose monitoring). By using these tools a patient can improve his or her diabetes stabilisation importantly and it is possible to prevent or at least to slow or moderate the course of chronic diabetic complications.

It is necessary to stress that this therapy improve overall patient's life quality as well. To reach this goal it is necessary to educate and even more - to motivate patients as well as health care professionals.

This article should inform you on this therapy which is an expensive but very efficient tool in diabetes treatment.
