Increase in the prevalence of both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) in the world has been noted during the last decades. These conditions are known to be risk factors for the cardiovascular, and some neurodegenerative and oncologic diseases.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in patients with obesity and DM2 and it is expected to become more common in countries where obesity prevalence is increasing. NAFLD predicts type 2 diabetes independent of obesity and nowadays NAFLD is considered to be risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, too.
The article deals with glycid and lipid homeostasis in liver, with special reference to the non-alcoholic steatosis and steatohepatitis. Mechanisms of connection of NAFLD, advanced liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver transplantation on one hand and DM2, CVD on the other hand.
