Rectourethral Fistulas After Radical Prostatectomy

Publication

Abstract

Rectourethral fistula( RUF) is a rare but severe complication after radical prostatectomy (RP). The retrospective analysis of the incidence and management of RUF from 2000 to 2013.

There were 758 patients who underwent open retropubic prostatectomy and 296 who underwent extraperitoneal endoscopic procedures. RUF developed in 6 of 1054 patients (0,56%) - in 2 after laparoscopic RP and in 4 after open retropubic RP.

All patients were treated with protective temporary colostomy and all but one with secondary transperineal surgical fistula closure. Surgical fistula closure was highly successful but required protective colostomy in all our patients.
