The mathematical knowledge needed for teaching to five year old pupils

Abstract

A short comparison of the official 'curricula' of the Czech Republic and Italy shows that the aims of kindergarten in terms of pupils' learning are similar. Space devoted to mathematics in the education of teachers is too limited in both countries.

A proposal to make teachers aware of children's mathematical pre-conceptions is presented via the use of manipulative tools.
